“Anastasia and The Ghostly Owl (The Choice Was Hers!)" was a book in the making from the time I was 15 years old. At that time, I went to bookstores and read the back cover of several books written on topics such as abuse. I didn’t want to write using the same threatening words such as rape, sexual assault, abuse, violence that I found myself reading.
I didn’t want to read these types of books, nor did I want to write the same type of book. In addition to feeling threatened by these words, a sense of diminishing another individual’s misfortune was prevalent. I wanted to present my experiences in a gentle, non-threatening, and non-minimizing way while presenting the theme of “hope” at the same time.
I did just that by writing my story metaphorically throughout. For example, the book title itself, the name Anastasia, the Owl, the use of Disney characters, nature, self-actualized people, survival games, etc.
